Fruit Tree Finale! – Self Control
Becoming a Fruit Tree: Self Control
Self control. The ability to control ones self. What is self? Spiritually this idea of self encompasses several things; Flesh, Desires, Mind, Emotions. The concept of self control encompasses the ability to keep these things in check.
This is one of the most difficult of all fruit. The reason is because this is the most antithetical to our nature. The human life is not one of self control, nor does the world promote self control.
Think on this, commercials on television are designed to promote impulse buying. Furthermore how many of them advertise things that are not good for you?
1st Corinthians 6:12 says this, “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything.”
If you give yourself enough time, you will see hundreds of opportunities to give into pleasures that are not Godly pleasures; Between television, movies, music, or even just other people. In fact other people are the most influential. Your friends want you to join in with them. So if your friends are out drinking they want you to drink. If they are doing drugs, they want you to do drugs, and the cycle continues.
Self Control is a method to move toward Holiness. Holiness is not a set of rules or laws, but rather an opportunity to give up the pleasures of this world in favor of the Kingdom Pleasures of God.
Humans are designed for pleasure. You cannot suppress your desire for pleasure. However, you can control where you indulge your need for pleasure. You could choose to give in to drinking, drugs, smoking, sex, violence, and other pleasures that are derived from the world, or you can choose to pursue after God and the pleasures that are found at his right hand.
This is the heart of Self control. Self Control is a tool that causes us to draw to God. Psalm 16:11 says it this way, “You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
God has abundant life, Unspeakable Joy, and Undeniable Pleasures that he has set aside in his presence for us. But, to get these, we need to give up the pleasures of this world.
Self Control is a tool, it allows us to resist the works of the enemy. Satan wants us to get in the flesh and out of the spirit. It is his goal. But, when we hold on to our self control and use it, he cannot get to us.
1st Corinthians 7:5 warns us of the danger, “Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.”
Satan loves to tempt us. He did the same to Jesus. He was tempted in every way that a man can be tempted, but he manager to hold on to his self control. In doing this he was able to overcome. We are called to be overcomers as well.
With this being the finale in my series, Becoming a Fruit Tree, I would like to let you know I am planning on expanding this into a Devotional. It is going to be 9-week (1 fruit per week) and its going to be 5-day a week study. Please pray from more of the Spirit of wisdom as I write this because I want this to be a book worth reading and not just a book. If you have thoughts to share leave me a comment. I would love insight from others on this.
