Pray Like This… [Part 5]

“Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. ‘Give us this day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.]’ Matthew 6:9-13

This is possibly the most well known pray in the world. People have said this single prayer, possibly every day since Jesus instructed them in it 2000 years ago. But instead of simply memorizing and repeat it, what if we were to cut it apart into its simple statements and examine them?

There are 9 distinct thoughts expressed here:

1. Our Father in Heaven

2. Hallowed be Your Name

3. Your Kingdom Come

4. Your Will be Done

5. On Earth as it is in Heaven

6. Daily Bread

7. Forgiveness

8. Deliverance

9, Kingdom

Now obviously it would be a very long post if we looked at each one of these, so instead I want to divide it into sections. Last time we discussed, “Your Will be Done” Let’s continue on.

This is an interesting continuation of our thoughts. We talk about the coming kingdom, and being proactive. Then we discuss giving ourselves to the will of God, and now we say we want it done on Earth as it is in heaven. But what does this mean? What does ‘On earth as it is in heaven’ look like? Why is this important for us?

Let me answer this in stages. What does Heaven on Earth look like?

Well, first off we need to have an understanding of what heaven is like. Here are some excellent scriptures;

“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

“Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. ”
Revelation 22:1-5

Imagine this for a moment. Pain, mourning, crying, all gone. In heaven all of the hurt and pain of the earth are gone. Sickness, disease, these things are not found there. Heaven is a place of perfection. Heaven is a place where the curse of sin and sickness is broken. Think about it, in heaven sin is no more, and this means no lying, no anger, just the love of God, and His blessing.

But the second question we need to ask ourselves is, “Why is this important to my prayer life?”

This one is two-fold, first, when we pray this, we are reminding ourselves that even though we are currently on earth, the Blood of Christ has already paid full admission price for you to experience heaven. The thing is that The prayer doesn’t tell us to wait for heaven to come, but rather to pray that the earth would become more like heaven.

“For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.” Romans 8:19. So when we pray we get the opportunity to answer the anxious longing of Creation. We in our prayer partner with Christ who is our intercessor before the Father according to Romans 8:34. He paid the price and now we partner with him to see it happen.

Now that we understand the significance. I want to take the opportunity to share this prayer in the form of a song. This is called “Earth Like Heaven” and it is by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser. If you like it, check out their website and buy their music. Their worship is centered on the heart of God and is much an expression or prayer as it is worship.
