When Children Become Pawns…

childNelson Mandela once said, “There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children.”

However, If History teaches us anything, it’s this. Children are nothing more than pawns to advance an agenda. Perhaps this sounds cynical to you and perhaps this is enough for you to click off this article. I hope not though because I want to tell a story or two.

You see a long time ago on the other side of the world there was a nation enslaved. These were the Jews. They had been slaves of Egypt for 400 years. But whilst slaves, they began to make babies, lots of babies. This caused the people in power to be afraid. This cause the leaders to make a decree.

Kill all the baby boys…

The leaders knew that the way to keep the people under control was to control the children. How many innocent children were killed? I don’t know, but God did get his way and did raise up a deliverer. Moses.

But this isn’t the only time. In Daniel chapter 1 we see the best Boys of Israel being taken to the King of Babylon so that He can train them in His school. He wants to use education to make the Hebrews subservient. This didn’t work because Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, and Daniel all stayed true to God.

However the fact remains, the children were merely pawns to the political agenda. They were being used to keep the people in line. It doesn’t stop there. In the time of Jesus, Israel was occupied by the Romans. To keep the peace, and maintain order there was a decree.

Kill all the baby boys…

In the midst of the Jesus survived, and was a deliverer. Yet once again the political agenda used the youth and murdered a generation to push their power base. By now you might think this is only a biblical fairy tale, and has no bearing on life in the ‘real world.’

What about Abortion? Hitler? Communism? I could go on with example after example of where political agendas used children to project their power and push their beliefs. The problem in all of these is that it never works out well for the children.

Abortion has ended the lives of millions of children before they even had the chance to live. Hitler killed millions of men, women, and children. Communism left millions in poverty, and many innumerable dead.

The political spirit seeks to use children as pawns and bargaining chips. They want to push a specific agenda, and they destroy the lives of Children to do it.

Jesus Loves The Little Children…

This was not the method or model of Jesus. Jesus was for the children. He let them come, he blessed them. He gave them hope. This is the model by which Christianity was birthed. So this should be the model by which we operate. Is this accurate?

Sadly, no. We Christians are just as likely to use children as pawns. This is clearly evident by the whole controversy of World Vision.

I do not need to go into the full story, but the controversy started when World Vision decided they would allow Married Homosexuals to work for them. This caused a big outrage, and within a few days, they decided to go back to their previous view.

I am not going to argue the merits of their change. I am a man who believes in traditional biblical marriage, but my pain is not with the marriage issue at all. My problem is that in the midst of the controversy, it was not world vision who was made to suffer, but the children.

You see the people who were outraged and wanted to support traditional marriage didn’t just send letters, emails, phone calls, and protests. No instead they cancelled their sponsorships.

According to Rich Stearns who is the president of World Vision, about 10,000 child sponsorships were cancelled due to the controversy. The problem is that this means that 10,000 children were used as fuel for a political agenda. This is unacceptable

If you want to let World Vision know you are opposed to their policy, do it, but do it in a way that protects the children. These children didn’t vote for or against gay marriage. World Vision never asked for their thoughts on the issue. But because of the issue, people are taking away from the children.

This is about as sensible as slapping your neighbor’s children because your neighbor hit a golf ball into your window. The children should be the priority. We should have found an equitable solution to the controversy that didn’t leave 10,000 children without help, and without hope. It makes me sad to see this, because once again the church has become so CONSUMED with a political agenda that the flame of Love was extinguished.

Jesus Loves The Little Children…

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red, brown, yellow
Black and white
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children
Of the world.

Jesus died for all the children
All the children of the world
Red, brown, yellow
Black and white
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus died for all the children
Of the world.

Jesus rose for all the children
All the children of the world
Red, brown, yellow
Black and white
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus rose for all the children
Of the world.

Jesus dealt with Sin in his time, but He didn’t do it at the expense of the Children. Why? Because he valued people, especially Children, more than politics or religion. Now, perhaps you have read this and your heart hurts because you see the brokenness of Christianity just like I did. Or, perhaps you think I am only writing this to get you to sponsor a world vision Child.

I am not. I do not sponsor a child through world vision. I am not asking you to. However there are dozens of organizations who deal with child sponsorship, so if you want to sponsor a child, contact one of them.

The Way we treat the children shows the true condition of our soul, and right now our soul is sick. I pray that as you read this, you are not offended. I am not meaning to call a specific person out. I am calling a specific issue out. I want to see the Children blessed. I want to see the Children prosper.

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with any child sponsorship group as of the writing of this article. Also the child in the above picture is not mine. He was adopted by a missionary friend who I was visiting in India. Yay Adoption!
