Christmas Lights…

So Yesterday I started a series about Christmas. My post made the point that Christmas was always about family. I reminisced about my childhood and the Christmases we shared as a family. But another thing I always loved about Christmas was the lights. I mean some of them were just beautiful, and other were mindblowingly cool, and still more were ugly and chaotic. But I loved to go look at the lights.

You see, Christmas is about the Light. There was a star in the sky and it was a map guiding people to a king that was born a baby. That King was Himself a light. In John Chapter 1, he writes of Jesus and says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Jesus is the light of the world. He is the light of ALL MANKIND, and darkness has never defeated him. In the same time of the year, Jewish brothers and sisters all over the world celebrate Hanukkah which is the festival of Light. Becuase light is important. It was the first thing that God created in Genesis 1, it was continually tended in the temple, and it was Jesus himself. The Light of all mankind.

We often talk about the light, but do we really let it sink in and illuminate our souls? John continues to discuss the light, “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.”

Jesus Christ came into the world that we would all have and share in His light. In Genesis 1:1 we saw light go into the darkness and illuminate everything. In John 1 we see the True light come into our darkness and illuminate us. God shine that light on us afresh and remove all the darkness that hides in us.

Christmas was about Light coming into the world.
