The Music of The Universe

Yesterday if you are a friend on Facebook, you will have seen me post a video from Dr. Michio Kaku discussing string theory. If you know me at all you know I have a hidden passion for Physics. I like it for the same reason I like theology and philosophy. There are things in the universe we do not understand, mysteries waiting to be solved, and each of these things looks at the mysteries of the universe in a different way. In the end all three will lead you to Christ if you are willing to look.

String theory fascinates me because so much of what it proposes makes sense in a biblical world-view. Many try to separate science and religion as being antithetical. They are not tangential to one another. Instead they are counterparts, or as one might say, two sides of the same coin. Both the theologian and the physicist are looking at the same universe, but are looking at it with different eyes.

Now lets take a look at one example at how science and religion are similarly explaining the fundamental laws of the universe. I will begin this segment by showing the video from Dr. Kaku, and then let’s discuss it.

The Bible says this of Jesus. “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power…” Hebrews 1:3 ESV

The bible tells us that his word upholds the universe. This is interesting isn’t it? We liken it to poetry and a cute metaphor. But what if this was true. What if there was a word holding the universe together? Well the physics model expressed throughout string theory says that at the smallest microscopic level there are strings that compose the matter of the universe. These strings weave together to form matter. (To my physics friends forgive me for trying to simplify String Theory.) Now, the thing about these strings is that they vibrate.

Now, lets think about this for just a second. All of the matter in the universe is composed of subatomic vibrating strings. Also, God has said in Hebrews that the whole of the universe is held together by the power of His word. What is a word? A word is a form of vibration.

So while the Bible does not specifically say string theory, it speaks of the sound that holds the universe in place and scientists are beginning to see that there is a sound holding the universe together. But I love this because it shows how we are all looking at the same universe and trying to understand it, each in a different way.

I respect the world of science because through their insights into the mechanics of the universe it helps me shape more of my own understanding. My Religion does not require me to give up my intellect, nor my love of science. the two are not mutually exclusive.  As my passion for science and scientific understanding grows so does my passion for the word, and it works in reverse as well.

Take for instance, Matthew Maury. He is a famous oceanographer who is credited with the modern discovery of ocean currents, and of his own admission it was because of a verse in Psalm 8 wherein David mentions the “Paths of the Seas” after meditating on this verse he souht out the paths and discovered the currents.

Because of this passion, I am going to begin some articles that focus on science and the Bible, and how they interact. Be watching for it. Also I will coming back to my series on Psalm 24 as well. As always, comments and discussion is welcome, but I will delete any comments that are argumentative. I want to see honest and open discussion, not mocking and arguing. Thanks.
